The ACORD P&C XML Business Message Specification is comprised of various data components, the most granular of which are Elements. Elements are logically grouped into Aggregates and/or Entities. Aggregates, Entities, and Elements are grouped together to create Business Messages. These messages reside within their respective Service. For example, the Surety Business Messages can be found within the Surety Service. Refer to 1.4 Definition of Terms for details concerning Elements, Aggregates, Entities, Messages, and Services.

Based on the explanation above, the Business Messages contained within the specification are found exclusively within their respective Service.

Aggregates and Entities may be located within the respective Service in which they are used, provided they are used exclusively by that one Service and are not reused in any other Service. When an Aggregate or Entity is used in more than one Service, it is documented within the "Common" section of the specification. The "Common" section is for documentation only and identifies those objects that are common to multiple services.

The exception to the categorizing of tags to "Common" involves the Claims Service. Claims, by its nature, encompasses all of Insurance and Surety. Suggesting that all aggregates and entities that are used in the Claims Service and any other Service as qualifying for "Common" would inflate the "Common" section of the specification. Hence, the use of an Aggregate or Entity within the Claims Service and any other Service does not qualify it for "Common". Aggregates must be used within any two services, other than Claims, to qualify for "Common".

Furthermore, Aggregates and Entities that qualify as being documented within the Insurance Service may be further categorized. The Insurance Service contains business messages for Commercial Lines and Personal Lines. Aggregates and Entities used exclusively within the Commercial Lines messages are categorized within the Insurance Service as Commercial Lines. Aggregates and Entities used exclusively within the Personal Lines messages are categorized within the Insurance Service as Personal Lines. Aggregates and Entities used within the Commercial Lines and Personal Lines messages are categorized within the Insurance Service as Common Insurance.
