2.9 Element

An element is the most basic unit of data in the ACORD Specification. An element is declared, based on a data type, to define a single piece of information passed between systems. An element is named according to specific rules and has a definition associated with it to provide additional information regarding its contents. An element may also have usage rules associated with it ("As used here..."), which describe how systems are expected to interpret the element.

An element contains data bounded by a leading start tag and a trailing end tag. For example, an element "Tag," containing data "SomeData," would look like this:

Note that this definition differs slightly from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) XML definition of element in that an ACORD element must contain data, but may not contain other elements. A W3C XML element (tag) containing other elements is defined by ACORD as an aggregate.
